What is Pixo?

A picture and PDF viewer for the Mac that replaces Preview for photos. It opens pictures at once, shows whole folders without importing them, has the picture and PDF tools you keep looking for, and uses Apple Intelligence on your Mac to answer questions about pictures and documents.

Which Macs can run Pixo?

Any Mac running macOS 26 or later, with Apple Silicon or Intel: each has its own download. The Apple Intelligence features (Ask, PDF summaries, Rename with AI, Describe, Invoices to Table and Reimagine) need Apple Silicon with Apple Intelligence turned on, and Apple Intelligence is not offered in every country and language yet. The viewer, the tools, the PDF viewer and the Vision features work without it, on Intel too.

Which formats does Pixo open?

Everything macOS can read: HEIC, JPEG, PNG, TIFF, GIF (animated too), WebP, AVIF, BMP, PSD, RAW from most cameras, SVG, and PDFs. Pixo saves pictures as JPEG, HEIC, AVIF, PNG or TIFF. It reads WebP but cannot save it, because macOS itself cannot write WebP.

Can Pixo replace Preview as my default viewer?

Yes. In Pixo, open Settings, General, and choose Make Pixo the Default for Pictures. Pictures you double-click in Finder then open in Pixo. To go back, use Get Info on a picture in Finder and choose another app under Open With.

Does Pixo change my original files?

No. Every tool saves a new file next to the original, or in a new folder in Downloads if you prefer, and PDF edits are saved as a copy. Only Rename changes a file, its name, and Edit, Undo puts the old name back. Move to Trash moves to the Trash, never deletes, and can be undone.

Privacy

Your pictures and files

Every connection the app makes

What does Pixo send over the internet?

Nothing about your pictures or files. It checks for updates, asks our website for announcements with only its version, checks a Pro licence key with our payment provider, and the inspector can show an Apple Maps map. The privacy page lists every connection and what is sent on each.

AI

Apple Intelligence

How AI works in Pixo

Where does the AI run?

On your Mac, with Apple's own models (Apple Intelligence) and Vision. Pixo sends your pictures and PDFs to no server, ours or anyone else's, and sells no AI credits.

Can I trust the answers?

Mostly, and check what matters. Answers about PDFs name the page they come from, figures are copied as written, and when a document does not say something Pixo says so. The on-device model is small: for a contract or an invoice, look at the page before you rely on a number.

Does Apple Intelligence see my picture?

On macOS 27, yes: the picture itself is given to Apple's model on your Mac. On macOS 26 the model cannot take pictures, so Pixo first reads the picture with Vision (what is in it, and its text) and gives the model that. Answers about colours and composition are better on macOS 27.

Can Pixo tell if a picture was made by AI?

It shows what the file says about itself: Content Credentials (from ChatGPT, Adobe Firefly and others), the IPTC "made by AI" tag, and prompts saved by Stable Diffusion, ComfyUI, Midjourney and others. Many AI pictures carry no such tags, and tags can be removed, so a picture without them may still be made with AI.

What is free?

The whole viewer and grid, Compare, the inspector, Live Text, Recents, Screenshots and Bookmarks, the menu bar panel and Peek, the PDF viewer with its editing, and every tool on one picture or PDF at a time. Asking about a picture is free for 10 questions a day.

What does Pro add?

Tools on many pictures at once, search by what is in the pictures, Boards, best shots and duplicate clean-up, Rename with AI and Describe, Crop to Subject, Summarise and Ask for PDFs, Invoices to a table, and unlimited questions.

How much is Pro?

$19.90 a year, or $29 once for the first 200 buyers and $49 after. Both are the same Pro, on 2 Macs. If a yearly plan ends, Pixo keeps working on the free plan.

How many Macs can I use Pro on?

2 at once. To move Pro to another Mac, open Settings, Pro on the old one and choose Deactivate This Mac, then enter the key on the new one.

Where is my licence key?

In the email from our payment provider, Polar, after you buy. Paste it into Pixo, Settings, Pro. You can also find it, and your invoices, from the account link on this site.

Can I get a refund?

Yes. Write to us within 30 days of buying and we refund you, no questions asked. The free plan lets you try nearly everything first.
